La novena edición del informe bienal Situación de los bosques del mundo, publicada a principios de 2011 (designado Año Internacional de los Bosques), trata sobre el tema “Cambiar las vías de acción y, así, las vidas: los bosques como múltiples vías hacia el desarrollo sostenible”. Esta edición adopta un enfoque más holístico de las múltiples maneras en que los bosques apoyan los medios de subsistencia. Los capítulos incluidos en esta edición de Situación de los bosques del mundo destacan cuatro aspectos que merecen mayor atención: las tendencias regionales de los recursos forestales; el desarrollo sostenible del sector forestal; la adaptación al cambio climático y la mitigación de sus efectos; y, por último, el valor local de los bosques. Examinados conjuntamente, estos temas proporcionan una indicación de la aportación real de los bosques a la creación de medios de vida sostenibles y a la reducción de la pobreza.

El logro del desarrollo humano sostenible global dependerá de la forma en que se manejen y mantengan los ecosistemas de la Tierra. Los ecosistemas son sistemas abiertos complejos, que entretejen la diversidad biológica con los procesos ecológicos para producir una gran gama de servicios para la biosfera planetaria y la sociedad humana. Sin embargo, son pocos los ecosistemas de la Tierra que son eficazmente manejados o mantenidos. A escala mundial se agotan las pesquerías, se subestiman y talan los bosques, se erosionan los suelos, se amenaza la biodiversidad y se interrumpen los procesos de ecosistemas vitales. Las áreas protegidas desempeñan una función importante para contrarrestar dichos procesos. Aunque constituyen la piedra angular de los esfuerzos de conservación de la biodiversidad, son insuficientes tanto en cuanto a la escala como a la cantidad—ya sea en tierra o en el mar—para paliar el desequilibrio existente en el manejo humano de los paisajes y los procesos y vida que contienen. Los enlaces son el instrumento para brindar beneficios que trasciendan las fronteras de los parques.

Zoological Society of London – Call for EDGE Fellows 2011

ZSL’s EDGE of Existence Programme provides fellowships for two-year projects in research and conservation of EDGE (Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered) mammals and amphibians. Applicants must be early-career conservation biologists (less than 5 years experience) who are nationals or residents of the country in which the EDGE species occur. The Fellowship includes a grant of up to GBP 5,000 per year, plus training and technical support. Applicants are strongly advised to discuss their projects with the EDGE team before applying. The Critically Endangered Animals Conservation Fund makes grants for specific actions to conserve species facing immediate threats of extinction. In 2010, the program awarded $573 thousand in grants for 19 projects in Africa, Asia, and the Americas. Applications are open globally to government agencies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, private-sector entities, and individuals. The closing date is 01 May 2011.

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service -- Conservation of Amphibians in Decline 2011

Amphibians in Decline supports activities that address threats to frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians that face an unprecedented threat of extinction. In 2010, the program funded 13 projects in Asia and Latin America with an average grant size of US$28 thousand. Applications are open globally to government agencies, non-profit organizations, educational institutions, private-sector entities, and individuals. The closing date is 01 May 2011.

Grant Program Information
The Wildlife Without Borders- Amphibians in Decline program will fund projects that conserve the world’s rapidly declining amphibian species. This program will support activities that address threats to frogs, toads, salamanders, newts, and caecilians that face a very high risk of extinction in the immediate future. Species should meet the criteria to be listed as “Critically Endangered” or “Endangered” on the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List. Species listed as “Data Deficient” on the IUCN Red List are also eligible if the applicant can provide information that suggests a similar urgency for conservation action. Species listed as “Extinct in Wild” are eligible if the applicant is proposing a reintroduction attempt.

The following species are NOT eligible for funding:

• Species that do not meet the criteria to be listed on the IUCN Red List as, “Critically Endangered” or “Endangered;”
• Species with natural habitat range located primarily within the United States, Canada, Europe, or Australia;
• Non-amphibian species.

Turtle Conservation Fund – Grants 2011

As one of its main functions, TCF administers a turtle conservation and research grants program. Awards are granted to organizations or individuals for specific conservation or research projects dealing with highly endangered tortoises or freshwater turtles, but not marine turtles, with either partial or full support as funding allows.

Priority for funding is given to projects that focus on tortoises or freshwater turtles that are already highly threatened according to the IUCN Red List criteria, either Critically Endangered or Endangered, or which may be highly threatened but not yet officially classified as such on the Red List. Award recipients enter into contractual agreement with either Conservation International or Chelonian Research Foundation to produce the proposed work (these two non-profit organizations serve as TCF's financial umbrella organizations). Award recipients are also encouraged to publish at least partial results of the supported research in the international scientific turtle journal, Chelonian Conservation and Biology , published by Chelonian Research Foundation (www.chelonian.org).

TCF Awards at the present time are approximately in the $2000 to $5000 range per project, with two funding cycles annually. Total disbursement has averaged between $30,000 to $50,000 per year to date, and is growing as the TCF grows. To date we have distributed over $500,000 in grants.

About the Conservation Grant Fund
The Northeastern Wisconsin Zoo and the N.E.W. Zoological Society, Inc. are proud to announce the creation of a Conservation Grant Fund to help support wildlife conservation and research efforts worldwide. Beginning Spring 2007, grant monies will be awarded to qualified projects/individuals through an application process.
Award monies will be given to those projects dedicated to results-based solutions. Applications from other AZA-accredited facilities will be accepted, however projects should focus directly on wildlife within their native habitats. There are no maximum or minimum awards and funding will be for a one-year term only.

Grant Application
We are currently accepting Grant Proposals from organizations and individuals. Grant applications are accepted year-round. The Board of Directors will meet once a year each spring to review all grant applications and award funds. All applications must be received in an electronic format by May 1. Up to 200 Australian Leadership Award Scholarships will be available on an annual basis for high achievers wishing to undertake postgraduate study at an Australian higher education institution.

Participating Australian higher education institutions

ALA Scholarships target those whose chosen field of study equips them to play a significant role in addressing, researching or combating development challenges in their country and/or region. Awardees will be provided with opportunities to enhance their leadership capacity and extend their networks.

Selection for an ALA Scholarship is highly competitive. It is based on the applicant’s professional and personal qualities, academic competence and, most importantly, their commitment to and potential impact on development outcomes for their country and region. Scholars are required to return to their home country for at least two years after completing their studies in Australia.

ALA Scholarship recipients will join an Australia Awards alumni network with strong and enduring links to Australia, the region and further afield. The network will facilitate the exchange of knowledge and information among scholarship recipients.

En el 2011, el Arca de Anfibios se complacerá en anunciar el tercer llamado anual de propuestas para el programa Beca Semilla. Esta beca competitiva de US$ 5,000 está diseñada para financiar proyectos de rescate que necesitan de dinero semilla para construir programas de largo plazo que atraigan financiamientos mayores. Las propuestas exitosas reflejarán los valores de AArk – por favor preste atención a los lineamientos de esta beca, que incluyen:

• enfoque en especies cuyas amenazas no pueden ser mitigadas en la naturaleza a tiempo para prevenir su extinción y que por tanto requiere de la intervención ex situ para que persista
• trabajar con especies en el (los) país (es) de su rango de distribución
• involucrar biólogos del país de distribución de la especie
• adherirse a los estándares recomendados de bioseguridad para programas ex situ
• ligar programas de conservación ex situ con in situ
• desarrollar asociaciones para maximizar la posibilidad de la sustentabilidad a largo plazo del programa.

Publiación: Manual of Methods: Human, Ecological and Biophysical Dimensions of Tropical Dry Forests

La publicación fue desarrollada por IAI en colaboración con Research Network para el estudio de los bosques tropicales secos en las Américas. Editores:Jafet M. Nassar, Jon Paul Rodríguez, Arturo Sánchez-Azofeifa, Theresa Garvin, Mauricio Quesada.

Este libro fue desarrollado como un manual de métodos diseñados específicamente para los bosques secos tropicales con un énfasis en temas incluidos en el proyecto IAI, pero posee una aplicación potencial amplia, puesto que las pregustad sobre cambio global aboradads son similiares a otros ecosistemas terrestres. El libro describe un amplio rango de métodos: ecológicos (estructura de ecosistemas, micribiología de suelos, fenología, interacciones bióticas), sensores remotos (información espacial, procesamiento de imagenes) y ciencias sociales (relaciones entre humanos y ecosistemas, indicadores socio-económicos y políticas publicas). Realiza un énfasis en la dinámica de los sistemas estudiados de forma de que los análisis realizados provean una figura de los procesos de degradación yo recuperación de ecosistemas altamente disturbados.

Auspiciado por la Fundación MarArthur, el Instituto Inter-Americano para Estudios en Cambio Global (IAI) realizó una evaluación en la interacción entre cambio climático y biodiversidad en los Andes Tropicales, asi como en las capacidades regionales para abordar tempas de investigación, mitigación y adaptación. El resultado del libro, co-producido con el Comité Científico en Problemas Ambientales (SCOPE) es la primera publicación sobre la situación actual en la región. La Fundación Universitaria de Las Palmas abre el plazo de solicitud para optar a las becas y ayudas del Programa Innova Canarias 2020®

La FULP abre del 4 al 29 de abril a las 14.00 horas, el plazo para la presentación de solicitudes de la convocatoria 2011 del Programa de Becas y Ayudas a la Investigación Innova Canarias 2020.

La finalidad del Programa es facilitar la formación investigadora a posgraduados recién titulados, profesores universitarios o grupos de investigación en proceso de consolidación, concediendo becas y ayudas para la realización de proyectos de tesis doctorales, trabajos de investigación aplicada y todo tipo de estudios ex-novo de carácter científico-técnico que contribuyan a incrementar el potencial creativo, innovador e investigador de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

Las becas o ayudas tendrán una duración de un año, desde el 1 de enero hasta 31 de diciembre de 2011, y una dotación máxima de 12.000 euros en función del interés, la calidad y la viabilidad de los proyectos seleccionados. Se financiarán prioritariamente aquellos trabajos que tengan impacto en el desarrollo social y económico de las Islas, figurando como ejes prioritarios de la convocatoria Turismo; Canarias Plataforma Tricontinental; e Innovación, Competitividad y Economía del Conocimiento.

En este sentido, el presidente de la Fundación Universitaria de Las Palmas, Manuel Campos, resalta que «la relación entre la universidad y la empresa es primordial, y más aún en estos tiempos de crisis, en los que se hace inexcusable debido a la necesidad que tenemos de cooperar y reinventarnos, ser creativos, poner en marcha nuevos proyectos que permitan mejorar nuestro entorno y ser más competitivos».

Desarrollar investigaciones en el seno de la Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria y trasladarlas al tejido productivo de la mano de empresas, instituciones y particulares que apoyen estos estudios, es el objetivo del Programa Innova Canarias 2020 de la FULP. Durante los 27 años de este Programa se han invertido 4 millones de euros en 995 becas y ayudas a la investigación.
