Cursos online gratuitos: Case-Based Introduction to Biostatistics
Dr. Scott L. Zeger, PhD
Learn to frame and address health-related questions using modern biostatistics ideas and methods.
Workload: 4-6 hours/week
About the Course
The course objective is to enable each student to enhance his or her quantitative
scientific reasoning about problems related to human health. Biostatistics
is about quantitative approaches - ideas and skills - to address bioscience
and health problems. To achieve mastery of biostatistics skills, a student
must “see one, do one, teach one.” Therefore, the course is organized to
promote regular practice of new ideas and methods.
The course is organized into 3 self-contained two-week modules. Each module except the first is built around an important health problem. The first module reviews the scientific method and the role of experimentation and observation to generate data, or evidence, relevant to selecting among competing hypotheses about the natural world. Bayes theorem is used to quantify the concept of evidence. Then, we will discuss what is meant by the notion of “cause.”
In the second module, we use a national survey dataset to estimate the costs of smoking and smoking-caused disease in American society. The concepts of point and interval estimation are introduced. Students will master the use of confidence intervals to draw inferences about population means and differences of means. They will use stratification and weighted averages to compare subgroups that are otherwise similar in an attempt to estimate the effects of smoking and smoking-caused diseases on medical expenditures.
In the final module, we will study what factors influence child-survival in Nepal using data from the Nepal Nutritional Intervention Study Sarlahi or NNIPPS. Students will estimate and obtain confidence intervals for infant survival rates, relative rates and odds ratios within strata defined by gestational period, singleton vs twin births, and parental characteristics.

Interest in the scientific method as broadly related to human health.
Ability to reason precisely. Mathematics through pre-calculus.
Cursos online gratuitos: Mathematical Biostatistics Boot Camp 1
This
class presents the fundamental probability and statistical concepts
used in elementary data analysis. It will be taught at an introductory
level for students with junior or senior college-level mathematical
training including a working knowledge of calculus. A small amount of
linear algebra and programming are useful for the class, but not
required.
Workload: 3-5 hours/week
About the Course
Statistics is a thriving discipline that provides the fundamental language
of all empirical research. Biostatistics is simply the field of statistics
applied in the biomedical sciences.
This course puts forward key mathematical and statistical topics to help students understand biostatistics at a deeper level. After completing this course, students will have a basic level of understanding of the goals, assumptions, benefits and negatives of probability modeling in the medical sciences. This understanding will be invaluable when approaching new statistical topics and will provide students with a framework and foundation for future self learning.
Topics include probability, random variables, distributions, expectations, variances, independence, conditional probabilities, likelihood and some basic inferences based on confidence intervals.

Course Syllabus
The goal of this course is to equip biostatistics and quantitative scientists
with core applied statistical concepts and methods:
- Students will learn basic mathematical biostatistics including probability distributions and their properties.
- Students will learn the basics of statistical likelihood.
- Students will learn the basics of confidence intervals.
- The course will introduce students to the display and communication of statistical data. This will include graphical and exploratory data analysis using tools like scatterplots, boxplots and the display of multivariate data.
Recommended Background
Knowledge of calculus, set theory and a moderate level of mathematical
literacy are prerequisites for this class. A small amount of programming
is useful, but not required.
Cursosn online gratuitos: Climate change
Professor Jon Barnett, Professor John Freebairn, Professor David Jamieson, Dr. Maurizio Toscano and Rachel Webster
This
course develops an interdisciplinary understanding of the social,
political, economic and scientific perspectives on climate change.
Workload: 6-8 hours/week
Sessions:Aug 12th 2013 (9 weeks long)
About the Course
What is Climate Change? How should we respond to
Climate Change? These questions are complex, not least because the responses
available to us depend upon who is providing the answers and the particular
perspective they take. The economist sees the economic challenges and
opportunities of Climate Change; the scientist sees the need to describe and
explain Climate Change; the policy-maker and social scientist
see Climate Change as a social problem. Therefore, the first step to
understanding Climate Change and what we do about it is to see how experts from
different disciplines engage with the issue. The second step is to appreciate how
our response to Climate Change depends upon the interplay between these
different approaches.
This course offers you an introduction to different disciplinary perspectives on Climate Change to help you think about how Climate Change affects you as an individual, as a member of your local community, as a citizen of your country and as a member of the global community. We have designed the presentations, discussions, activities and assessment tasks in this course to help you understand what Climate Change is and what you – and we – should do about it.
